The cyclocross season usually starts at the end of October. While cyclists race on the road in the summer, they often swap their road bikes for cyclo-cross bikes in the autumn and winter months, and a smooth road surface for a muddy course full of obstacles.
Although cyclocross used to be mainly popular in Belgium, it is increasingly popular in the Netherlands too. Marianne Vos has been riding both road and field for years, as has Belgium's Wout van Aert. The Amersfoort-based Lars van der Haar is truly a cyclo-cross rider, as are Dutch Fem van Empel and Belgian Laura Verdonschot.
In cyclocross, a defined course is run as fast as possible. This course is unpaved and takes riders along muddy paths through woods, fields and sand. Obstacles are also built in and some sections even require walking, climbing or scrambling, with or without the bike on the shoulder. Cyclocross involves racing in various rankings, from the World Cup and Superprestige to the X2O trophy.
Would you like to see a cyclo-cross race up close? From our EuroParcs holiday parks, you can easily reach one of the cyclo-cross competitions where you can stand alongside the course. For example, EuroParcs Zilverstrand is only 4 kilometres from the course of the Zilvermeercross which will take place in Mol on 23 December 2022. And EuroParcs Hoge Kempen is located 30 kilometres from the Heusden Zolder circuit where the Superprestige Heusden-Zolder will take place on 27 December 2022.
