The city of Emmen is located in beautiful Drenthe. A city that you quickly associate with Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen. But did you know that Emmen also has the largest open-air museum in the Netherlands, various other museums and no fewer than ten dolmens?
The city owes its nickname 'open green city' to the fact that the new housing estates are spacious and equipped with a lot of greenery. Visit one of the museums in Emmen. Such as the Center for Visual Arts in De Fabriek, museum farm De Nabershof, the AGA Museum, the FC Emmen Museum and the war museum Ergens in Nederland 1939-1945. Rensen Park will be transformed into a creative park with galleries, studios and the Museum of Contemporary Tibetan Art (museum dedicated to Tibetan art).
You can't say Emmen without saying Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen. Travel the world in one day. Discover the green jungle on foot or by boat and look for ring-tailed lemurs, elephants and spider monkeys. Take a truck safari across the savanna of Serenga where you might spot lions, hippos or zebras. Or go on a real polar expedition where you can suddenly come face to face with fur seals, polar bears and penguins. At Wildlands it's all possible!
The landscape around Emmen consists of a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests, reed and marshland. A wonderful place to explore on foot or by bike. The open-air museum Veenpark just outside Emmen is highly recommended. Here you can learn about peat extraction over the past 150 years. You can see an old peat village, 't Aole, where you can see how people lived in sod huts around 1870, while the situation between 1920 and 1966 is depicted in the village of Bargermond. In the peat river Runde, islands have been constructed with a playground. A narrow-gauge train runs between the hotspots at the theme park.
