The city of Antwerp in Belgium breathes history and is bursting with cosy boutiques, cobbled streets and good restaurants. In this vibrant city, hotspots such as coffee houses, bars and concept stores pop up like mushrooms. Enough reasons to visit Antwerp!
Antwerp is divided into several districts, such as the Jewish Quarter and the Diamond Quarter where you will find the Diamond Museum (DIVA). Sights like the Central Station and the Cathedral of Our Lady are not to be missed. The latter is even included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Port Building is also worth a visit, if only for its beautiful piece of architecture. Other museums to put on your list are Museum aan de Stroom, the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten and the ModeMuseum with its changing exhibitions. The shopping street De Meir is the place to be, while the city beach Sint-Anneke is the place to be on hot summer days. Do not forget to dive underground in the tunnel system De Ruien where you will discover the secrets of medieval Antwerp. Fun for the kids: watching animals in ZOO Antwerpen or going to the biggest Belgian chocolate museum Chocolate Nation.
The Kalmthoutse Heide is located just across the border with the Netherlands. The area is a favourite with Dutch and Belgian hikers alike. Various walks have been marked out in the nature reserve. If you step on your bike, you can paddle along the 32 km long cycle route right through the park. Also close by is the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe. This is where a number of villages in Zeeland were flooded in the fight against the Spaniards. Part of the area remained drowned land after that time. Today, the nature reserve is home to fascinating plants and animals, such as birds, seals, foxes and roe deer.
